The Health Habit Most People Ignore (Until It Starts Causing Problems)

Can we talk about something wildly unsexy but incredibly important?

Hydration.

I know. Not exactly the topic that gets people fired up.

But hear me out.

Every week, I have patients tell me they're exhausted, dealing with headaches, feeling foggy, struggling with constipation, experiencing muscle cramps, or noticing their energy crashes halfway through the day.

One of the first questions I ask?

"How much water are you actually drinking?"

The answer is almost always the same:

"Probably not enough."

Your Body Runs on Water

Your body is approximately 60% water.

Every cell, every organ, every metabolic process depends on adequate hydration.

Water helps:

  • Deliver nutrients to your cells

  • Support detoxification pathways

  • Regulate body temperature

  • Maintain healthy digestion

  • Support brain function

  • Lubricate joints

  • Transport hormones and nutrients

Yet so many people are walking around mildly dehydrated and assuming how they feel is normal.

It's not.

Coffee Doesn't Count (Sorry)

I love coffee.

You know I do.

This is not an anti-coffee post.

But coffee is not a substitute for water.

Neither is your energy drink.
Neither is your third sparkling beverage of the day.

Your body still needs actual hydration.

Think of coffee as coffee.

Think of water as water.

They serve different purposes.

The Sneaky Signs of Dehydration

Most people think dehydration means feeling thirsty.

That's actually one of the later signs.

Long before thirst shows up, you may experience:

  • Fatigue

  • Brain fog

  • Headaches

  • Dizziness

  • Dry skin

  • Constipation

  • Muscle cramps

  • Increased cravings

  • Reduced exercise performance

Sound familiar?

Sometimes the solution isn't another supplement.

It's a water bottle.

Electrolytes Matter Too

Hydration isn't just about water.

Your body also relies on electrolytes like sodium, potassium, and magnesium to move fluids into cells and support proper nerve and muscle function.

This is especially important if:

  • You exercise regularly

  • You sweat heavily

  • You're eating a lower-carbohydrate diet

  • You're spending time in the heat

  • You're under significant stress

Many people are drinking water but still not feeling hydrated because they're missing the minerals that help the body utilize it effectively.

Start Simple

You don't need a complicated hydration protocol.

You don't need a trendy bottle that tracks your every sip.

You just need consistency.

Try:

✔ Starting your morning with water before coffee

✔ Keeping a water bottle within reach

✔ Adding electrolytes when appropriate

✔ Drinking throughout the day instead of trying to catch up at night

Small habits add up.

The Bigger Picture

One of the core principles of functional medicine is that foundational habits matter.

We love talking about hormones, gut health, advanced testing, and personalized protocols.

And those things absolutely have their place.

But sometimes the basics are where the biggest opportunities live.

Hydration isn't glamorous.

It won't go viral on social media.

But it supports nearly every system in your body.

So before you assume your fatigue, headaches, brain fog, or sluggishness require a complicated solution, ask yourself one simple question:

Have I actually given my body the water it needs today?

You might be surprised by how much better you feel when you do.

Always cheering you on,

Jenn
