Let’s talk about Genitourinary Syndrome of Menopause (GSM)
As women glide into menopause, those dipping estrogen levels can stir up some unexpected changes—one being genitourinary syndrome of menopause (GSM). This condition likes to tinker with vaginal and urinary tract tissues, occasionally throwing comfort and quality of life off balance. Yet, too many of us either haven’t heard of GSM or feel a bit bashful about chatting it up with a provider.
Let’s break it down…
What Exactly Is GSM?
GSM is like a little posse of symptoms that roll in when estrogen takes a bow. It affects the vagina, vulva, and urinary tract—areas that rely on estrogen to stay plump, elastic, and hydrated. When the hormone dips, you might notice dryness, uncomfortable moments in the bedroom, urgent bathroom dashes, or even a recurring infection or two. Unlike hot flashes that eventually cool off, GSM tends to stick around and turn up the volume if left unchecked.
